Gomspace CEO leaving
After nine years at the helm, GomSpace’s outgoing CEO Niels Buus arguably knows more about building a business selling cubesats than anyone else. Buus witnessed the rise of cubesats as a popular, low-cost platform for startups to reach space, and led GomSpace to become a world renown seller – with a large presence in the global commercial market. GomSpace had 185 full time employees and generated 147,720 million Swedish Krona ($14.4 million) for the first nine months of 2022. More than 80% of the company’s order intake was from commercial customers – a strikingly high figure compared to most satellite manufacturers. GomSpace’s commitment to the commercial market put the company in the eye of the storm more than once when startups lacked the funds to pay for satellites they already booked. Notable instances include the eventual cessation of payments from Sky and Space Global in 2018, the suspension of Aerial & Maritime in 2020, and the termination of an unnamed delinquent customer in 2022. As Gomspace begins its search for a new CEO, it will need to find one with the cunning to discern worthy customers, as well as the patience needed to weather the volatility that comes from dealing with startups.
